Unmarked. Messkit Model 1931 (Kochgeschirr 31) In 1931, a new generation of equipment was introduced in the German army, the Reichswehr. These included bread bags, canteens and mess kits. The new Kochgeschirr 31 was a redesign. It was shorter than the old model (Kochgeschirr 1908 ), now containing 2 liters instead of the previous models 2.2 liters, and had only 3 marks of 0.25 l inside where there had been four earlier. The new model was to be worn on the bread bag, fixed in a vertical position by a single straight leather strap. To the bread bag, a leather loop and an additional D-ring were added. The mess kit was modified for a single strap. A mess kit was carried by every German foot soldier. The kit was constructed of two pieces of painted aluminum, which were designed to fit tightly together to form a single container. The lower "bail" portion was used for soups and stews, while the upper "plate" portion was used for more solid fare. The mess kit sections, when clamped together, could be used to transport rations for future consumption. Both pieces could be used for cooking, but this quickly destroyed the flat, field-grey or olive drab painted finish. The subject of food is very close to the heart of every soldier. Any item that contains food is highly revered. It was in this spirit that many German soldiers engraved their name or initials on their mess kit. The engravings ranged from simple initials to elaborate works of art. After WWII, some manufacturers started producing mess kits in the early 1950s for police units in East and West Germany. Most of these early post-war mess kits are unmarked. Since the manufacturers used the old molds, often the only distinguishing feature of these models is that the post-war produced mess kits contain handles usually made of aluminum. As the cold war progressed, the now opposing German forces on either side of the iron curtain produced their own mess kit models based on the original 1908 design. The East German NVA (Nationale Volksarmee) introduced this model. The shape and size closely followed the former Kochgeschirr 31, but the handle and wire carrying handle were designed differently. The West German Bundeswehr introduced a taller model, which contained an additional third tray. The East German mess kits carry no marks and have an overall poor quality, but still followed close to the dimensions of the 1931 model. The West German models are constructed of a finer quality, and are very different from the 1931 model. G2011..........WW2 style post war Esbit Folding Stove.
